I have one that fits your criteria (with limited relevance!): Avengers v. Doom v. Namor!!
I wrote about it here:
http://integr8dfix.blogspot.com/2011/07/avengers-super-villain-war.html

P.S. the Shocker's not Ditko villain; good Lee/Ditko stuff though!

Those pre-crossover events sound awesome. It must have been fun to read the stories from the 70's that were referenced in the 1980's.

Superman is a difficult character to write for. The best stuff was either where stories where we saw his humanity (Hamilton, Siegel, occasionally Bates and Maggin) or the tongue-in-cheek stuff where you can tell the adults were having alot of fun like the time Superman solved his Lois-Lana dilemma by marrying both in a parallel universe where bigamy was allowed!

Byrne's decline as artist, writer, and creator are all too evident in this work.

Thanks again...I've read so many so called experts and internet message board mutants who hate all things Byrne, but the bottom line is that he was an innovator.

Regarding Thomas + Adams on X-Men: I agree that it does not hold up today in terms of story. It's rather obscure.

The only saving grace with the GL/GA run is that it truly was different than any previous Green Lantern comic before it. It's true it's overrated (sales were not great and it's pure liberalism).

I should have added that Claremont and Byrne were at their creative peak which was pretty awesome. Much better than the Thomas and Adams stuff. BTW, I think Neal Adams is the bomb but his X-Men and GL/GA were way overrated. I would declare that both were often unreadable.

This was awfully good stuff, representing what the best that comics were capable of before Alan Moore. My only nit-picky issue is that it taps into teenager neurosis and as a result is less appealing to older readers.

Byrne's Superman was emblematic of Byrne's falling star which began its decline with the Fantastic Four. This series sealed my loss of faith in the man's talents. I wish I had a copy of the comic where Superman meets the Joker to show people how dreadful Byrne's work could be.

I liked the movie up to a point (which we'll get to later). What made it fall apart was seeing Capt America and the Howlin' whatevers take out those nazi ray guns. The ray gun thing (which is beyond our 21st century technology) destroyed whatever frail suspension of disbelief I had going. It became ridiculous at that point.
