Amazing Spider-Man 639 Review: Part 2 of One Moment in Time, this time with no reprint gimmicks, Joe Quesada once again scripted his explanation and details for One More Day (the controversial storyline which reboot Spider-Man’s wedding). Without further ado, here are my pros and cons of Amazing Spider-Man 639:
The Good
- Paulo Rivera’s artwork is exceptional once again, and he seems to be getting the Brooklyn Quesada rub. Could be a rising start or a one-hit wonder.
- I’m a black costume mark.
- Story had me at the edge of my seat, much better than ASM 638′s mish-mash.
- Generally keeps most of Spidey and Mary Jane’s history- you see ASM 638′s ending was a RED HERRING, so many criticisms I had must now be softened. Here it is in a nutshell: Spidey was knocked out and missed his wedding, leaving MJ at the altar. When they finally spoke, she revealed she wanted Peter to give up being Spider-Man, and he said no. She became more upset. Thanks to her Aunt Anna, she sees Peter and reveals she can’t get married to him because of Spidey- she had wanted to have a kid, but that’s off the table now. So they decided to love each other without marriage or her becoming pregnant. So… apparently besides them being “married” and perhaps MJ becoming pregnant and having a miscarriage, most of the old stories did happen the way we remember them…I think.
The Bad
- Unfortunately, Joey Quesada had to play up the level of detail to the fanboys from Comic Book Resources and the Marvel boards by going a step or two further. In effect, he opened yet another can of worms. We see that Peter did unmask to the world, and Aunt May was shot, but reality was retconned so there was no deal with the devil: Mephisto is totally off-panel as the Unseen Hand of this earth. Instead of MJ and Peter bargaining with him as shown in last issue and OMD, the new reality had Aunt May flat-lining, and her heart stopped, but Peter revived her via artificial via CPR.
- So is Marvel being semantic here? Okay, so Mephisto erased the marriage and pregnancy but Peter and MJ still lived together and loved each other for a long time (at least up until Peter used CPR on Aunt May). Why make a big deal about a marriage ring?
The Ugly
- Comic book fanboys from around the nation are finding exceptions to MJ never being pregnant, such as that being an integral part in the Clone Saga.
- During OMD, Peter asks every Marvel genius and sorcerer to help Aunt May, and they said it was impossible. I guess no one knew about the wonders of CPR- it can also cure a gunshot wound! Oh wait, it must have been Mephisto’s deal/magic. So…Peter really didn’t save May? Confused. CAN OF WORMS.

It’s for marijuana, not heroin. Hope you’re informed now.
lizard = good villain, but the rest of the movie sounds gay
Marvell Sucks, Japanese Manga and Anime is way better.
just luv it, no one can do it better than Mary!! thumbs up!!
Depending on where the Peter Parker/Mary Jane Apartment of Tedious Love is, going to midtown Manhattan should not be too big of a deal, assuming he has an hour or two to spare. Half hour, if he can catch an express subway.Mary Jane is an artist, so I'm assuming she would want to live in SoHo or Chinatown. (The Chinatown in Manhattan, that is.) If so, that would DEFINITELY be an easy thing to do. (I spent about 4 days in Manhattan once, so, I'm an “expert”!!)
I sense that you are probably trying to make a point. Before you try to make some point, understand that I believe marijuana should be legalized.I do not partake of the mary jane.
Hey m'man,
I can certainly understand this reaction. Often when off-character things happen at my D&D game table I feel similarly. The point being: “Listen, I understand we're talking about the land of fairies and elves here, but can we all agree on believable events within that context?” However, while I do believe your heart's in the right place, I also think the foundation of what's angering you is a little off.
To illustrate the point, let's discuss Lucas' reworking of the original Star Wars films. I spent a lot of time discussing this with people as angry as you are about how that was being handled. But my conclusion was that it wasn't the reworking which was angering people, but the fact that Lucas decided to call the new work “definitive”—removing the originals from manufacture. He has since corrected the error, packaging both together at purchase, and had he done this originally… I think there would have been no argument at all.
My advice? Dude, Joe Quesada cannot erase from your memory Peter Parker's marriage to Mary Jane Watson, nor can he cause those comics to vanish. They're in your collection, and always will be. Enjoy them at your leisure. If Quesada has an idea for a Spider-Man story with requires some retcons, well, he's probably put a lot of care into that story. Give it a chance and it may surprise you!
Cheers,
Master Jimmy
I'm going to start using that from now on.
