Amazing Spider-Man 639 Review: Quesada Retcons One More Day!

Amazing Spider-Man 639 Review: Part 2 of One Moment in Time, this time with no reprint gimmicks, Joe Quesada once again scripted his explanation and details for One More Day (the controversial storyline which reboot Spider-Man’s wedding). Without further ado, here are my pros and cons of Amazing Spider-Man 639:

one moment in time

The Good

  • Paulo Rivera’s artwork is exceptional once again, and he seems to be getting the Brooklyn Quesada rub. Could be a rising start or a one-hit wonder.
  • I’m a black costume mark.
  • Story had me at the edge of my seat, much better than ASM 638′s mish-mash.
  • Generally keeps most of Spidey and Mary Jane’s history- you see ASM 638′s ending was a RED HERRING, so many criticisms I had must now be softened. Here it is in a nutshell: Spidey was knocked out and missed his wedding, leaving MJ at the altar. When they finally spoke, she revealed she wanted Peter to give up being Spider-Man, and he said no. She became more upset. Thanks to her Aunt Anna, she sees Peter and reveals she can’t get married to him because of Spidey- she had wanted to have a kid, but that’s off the table now. So they decided to love each other without marriage or her becoming pregnant. So… apparently besides them being “married” and perhaps MJ becoming pregnant and having a miscarriage, most of the old stories did happen the way we remember them…I think.

The Bad

  • Unfortunately, Joey Quesada had to play up the level of detail to the fanboys from Comic Book Resources and the boards by going a step or two further. In effect, he opened yet another can of worms. We see that Peter did unmask to the world, and Aunt May was shot, but reality was retconned so there was no deal with the devil: is totally off-panel as the Unseen Hand of this earth. Instead of MJ and Peter bargaining with him as shown in last issue and OMD, the new reality had Aunt May flat-lining, and her heart stopped, but Peter revived her via artificial via CPR.
  • So is Marvel being semantic here? Okay, so Mephisto erased the marriage and but Peter and MJ still lived together and loved each other for a long time (at least up until Peter used CPR on Aunt May). Why make a big deal about a marriage ring?

The Ugly

  • Comic book fanboys from around the nation are finding exceptions to MJ never being pregnant, such as that being an integral part in the Clone Saga.
  • During OMD, Peter asks every Marvel genius and sorcerer to help Aunt May, and they said it was impossible. I guess no one knew about the wonders of CPR- it can also cure a gunshot wound! Oh wait, it must have been Mephisto’s deal/magic. So…Peter really didn’t save May? Confused. CAN OF WORMS.

  1. Spider Man, I agree with, but Ryu’s the face of this franchise (and most other Vs. series, for that matter) because this is, first and foremost, a FIGHTING game series. Mega Man’s thing is platfoming, not so much fighting.

  2. hey to all who were wondering… the final theme for The Amazing Spider Man trailer (first person rooftop scene) is called “Unavowed Vigilante” by composer Danny Cocke. Check it out on my facebook player. facebook/dannycocke. Cheers!

  3. i guess. she might be a little jelous because her new movie is also comming out. im seeing her movie and spider man though! possibly even shrek the third. =]
